Air Conditioning Contractor License Exam

Scope of Work:

If you have experience installing and servicing air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems, then this is your license. It covers central systems, ductwork, boilers, the piping and insulation that serve them and low-voltage controls — but not gas lines, potable water, sewer or electrical power wiring. Florida issues it in two classes: Class A is unlimited, while Class B is capped at 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 Btu of heating in any one system. Our school covers the Business and Finance portion of the required exams but not the trade knowledge portion. Most applicants have extensive knowledge in their trade and don’t have a problem passing that exam but need help with the Business and Finance portion.

Exam Information:

In the State of Florida, contractors must pass both Business & Finance and Trade Knowledge examinations with a minimum score of 70%. These tests may be taken in any order, but since the Business & Finance books and study material are required for both exams (for many, but not all license classifications), it is much easier to prepare, pass, and get this exam completed first.

(1) Business & Finance Exam — "Computer Based Test"

This is an "Open Book Test" utilizing 3 exam reference books with (120) scored multiple choice questions to be completed in a (6 ½) hour test session. It is administered on computer at over a thousand Pearson VUE testing centers across the country, and students may schedule the exam at any location and on any date convenient for them.

(2) Air Conditioning Trade Knowledge Exam — "Paper & Pencil Test"

Class A and Class B contractors must pass two "Open Book Tests", each with 65 scored multiple choice questions, which must be completed in 4 ¾ hour sessions. Testing for this classification is offered every even month in Tallahassee, Orlando and Miami. Students must register at least 30 days prior to the testing date they desire.
